Reviews on the New Windows 8

Windows will never be the same again.

Gone is the good old start menu. Gone is the left side applications on the main screen. For good or for bad, gone is the traditional interface that dominated the previous Windows versions. On 25 October 2012, Microsoft introduced Windows 8.

The old interface we have used for most our lives is now replaced by a new metro-style interface (this 'metro' name is dubbed by Windows). This basically means that Windows 8 has a tablet-style look to it and it uses Tiles for navigation.

Honestly, it's a big radical change from Microsoft.

What's New?

1) Coloured Tiles and Charms

First up is that the new windows 8 uses Tiles on the start menu. From there, you can navigate to your internet browser, music, files etc using either your mouse (for PCs) or your fingers (for tablets). Each coloured tile represents an application, say Facebook or Office. The Tiles are 'live' which means that they showcase information in real-time, which is really handy as you need not open them to get your desired information. For Charms, it is a neat and useful column of icons that pops out when you click on the bottom right corner of the screen.

2) Windows Store

Great isn't it. Now you can download hundreds of Apps from the Windows Store whether paid or free. Imagine playing Angry Birds on your desktop PC. Cool huh.

3) Fresh and Speedier interface.

The new Windows 8 uses a fresh feel and look for almost all its application, such as, its Music player. It's easy to use and looks better than its predecessors.

Moreover, it's visibly faster than Windows 7 as many application loads faster on the new OS.

4) SkyDive integration

You have a Windows PC, a Windows tablet and a Windows phone. Logically, you would want to access your files from any of these devices. Skydive does exactly that for you. Yup, you can now upload your files into Microsoft cloud storage service and seamlessly enjoy your videos or music across all your devices.

5) Laptop+Tablet devices

With the launch of Windows 8, many PC makers like Dell, Hp and Lenovo would be expect to churn out more tablet PCs (laptops+tablet hybrid) as Windows 8 works best on a tablet. So for users who are deciding on whether to get a tablet or a laptop, why not consider a tablet PC? Gone are the days where tablet PCs are slow and cranky. Perhaps we should do a review on the best ones out there, but till then, I would recommend Dell XPS 12.

Conclusion

For the last couple of years, the talk have been on Apple devices or Google's Android or Samsung phones. It has seldom been Microsoft. So far, Windows 8 has been successful in bringing some of the talk back to Microsoft. Most initial comments have been in their favour, saying that they like the new design and features etc. So will you upgrade to the new OS? The choice is yous!
